Part 3: Mentor wins again; The ghost of D.J. Augustin haunts Charlotte

Chicago Bulls 89 Final
Recap | Box Score
87 Charlotte Bobcats
Josh McRoberts, PF Shot Chart 27 MIN | 2-7 FG | 0-0 FT | 6 REB | 5 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 0 TO | 6 PTS | -5

He’s officially not hesitant to pull the trigger from deep, but last night was probably a bit overboard. A lot went through McBob tonight offensively and that will continue in the absence of Kemba.

Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, SF Shot Chart 22 MIN | 3-11 FG | 0-0 FT | 4 REB | 0 AST | 1 STL | 1 BLK | 3 TO | 6 PTS | -10

Continues to do his best to be assertive on the offensive end, especially with his jump shot, but the improvement is extremely hard to pinpoint. 3 turnovers with no assist really hurt his grade in this game.

It’s an unfortunate situation right now, because I really feel like Clifford is trying to find a way to justify MKG getting more minutes, but he can’t.

Al Jefferson, C Shot Chart 38 MIN | 15-26 FG | 1-2 FT | 13 REB | 1 AST | 0 STL | 3 BLK | 3 TO | 32 PTS | +10

Can’t be stopped recently – in the past 10 games, Jefferson is now averaging 24.2 PPG, 11.5 RPG and shooting 54.8% from the floor. It’s time to officially enter him into the conversation of possible NBA all-star reserves.

Ramon Sessions, PG Shot Chart 33 MIN | 4-14 FG | 0-0 FT | 3 REB | 11 AST | 0 STL | 1 BLK | 3 TO | 8 PTS | +9

11 assists is great from Sessions and he’s clearly learning to play a totally different role in the absence of Kemba, but 0 trips to the foul line is shocking. There’s also no way this team can generate enough points to win (especially without Kemba) unless Sessions is able to get to the charity stripe, which he is usually so good at doing.

Gerald Henderson, SG Shot Chart 37 MIN | 5-12 FG | 1-2 FT | 6 REB | 3 AST | 1 STL | 0 BLK | 2 TO | 11 PTS | -6

Continue to like his effort on the glass and his commitment to get to the rim. Just really couldn’t find a rhythm on the offensive end tonight to get Charlotte going outside of Jefferson.

Anthony Tolliver, PF Shot Chart 26 MIN | 0-3 FG | 0-0 FT | 2 REB | 1 AST | 1 STL | 1 BLK | 0 TO | 0 PTS | +8

Charlotte WILL NOT win when Tolliver has night’s like this.

Cody Zeller, C Shot Chart 21 MIN | 2-4 FG | 3-4 FT | 8 REB | 0 AST | 0 STL | 1 BLK | 0 TO | 7 PTS | +1

Impressive game on the glass for Zeller. I just enjoyed watching him bang with the Chicago bigs tonight more than anything – not intimidated. Thought that this was maybe one of the more encouraging development games I’ve watched Cody play this season. Also, the only player for the Bobcats that was able to get to the foul line tonight.

Jannero Pargo, PG Shot Chart 15 MIN | 5-8 FG | 2-2 FT | 0 REB | 2 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 3 TO | 15 PTS | -11

The guy can score, no denying that. Was let down by his partner in crime off the bench, Anthony Tolliver, tonight.

Steve Clifford

Mentor got the better of you tonight coach. Thibs knew that if Chicago could guard without fouling, which they did, it was their game to lose.

Five Things We Saw

  1. Charlotte is 1-14 this season when their opponent attempts more free throws in a game — Chicago took 12 more (22) free throws than the Bobcats (10) did tonight. Again, guard without fouling – the Bulls are one of the best teams in the league at this.
  2. D.J. AUGUSTIN – The ex-Bobcat torched TWC Arena tonight for 28 points led by 6 3-pointers. He’s taken full advantage of being the guy in Chicago at the PG slot — in the past 5 games Augustin is averaging 21.6 PPG, 5.6 APG and shooting 57.6% from behind the arc.
  3. Bulls 3-point shooting — Chicago is not a good 3-point shooting team on the season (4th worst) at 34.2%, but Augustin led the Bulls attack from deep (6) with a chip on his shoulder tonight. Mike Dunleavy and rookie Tony Snell pitched in with 5 bombs, combined, themselves.
  4. Coach Thibodeau got the best of Clifford for the 3rd straight time when these two have faced off as head coaches. Clifford will have one last shot this season on the final night of the regular season.
  5. Charlotte will now embark on a 4-game west coast swing that will surely define where the season goes from here. It begins Wednesday night in Denver.

next stretch is filled with losses, but unless new york, detroit, or cleveland separate themselves significantly……i’m sure clifford will stay in win-now mode because of the soft end of year schedule.

what a waste of a season this has been. and yeah that was our own draft pick killing us last night. the same draft pick we let walk for no compensation. it will surely be MKG in a few years. or biz. or maybe ajinca in a few weeks.

Im actually really happy for DJ.
Glad to see he is having some success somewhere.
Although i still dont want him to beat us -_-
Im still in the boat of wanting to cheer to win because Charlotte is my team but being ok with losing because of better draft picks. (3 potential draft picks in upcoming draft? bundle and trade for top 5 pick or veteran? idk but options are there)

Biz and MKG combined for 32 minutes… This is getting a little silly…
