This will be a quick one, but I just wanted to point you in the direction of a new way of viewing one some data: Net Position Defense by Team – Charlotte Bobcats. I have added a new section to the stats library – these are not new numbers, just a different way of viewing them. I currently have a player's net defense available on their player page, along with the actual and expected numbers. This new page just allows you to view a team's full roster of players' net defense at once. You want to see which player has done the best guarding when at the 4 – it is available – same for any other position, as well as overall.
Remember: The numbers are net: Expected opponent output minus actual output. So, when net points is positive, the opposition is having trouble scoring – good. When net turnovers is positive, they are forcing fewer turnovers from their man than expected – bad.
I chose to do net rather than actual output just because there is such variation in the talent faced between certain players (starters and bench – but also between positions) that it made more sense to me. It is not definitive – remember, the numbers are based off lineups but cannot account for switches on defense or numbers gathered on the fast break. There is only so much you can do with a play by play – but this gives a quick look at a team and I hope it proves interesting.
