The Charlotte Bobcats have signed Larry Hughes to fill the position of “veteran guard that Larry Brown relies on to much for the taste of most fans”. Or maybe as a combo guard. Or both. Whatever – Mr. “Hey Larry Hughes please stop taking so many bad shots” is a Bobcat. Here is his stats page on this site: Larry Hughes player page. His shooting numbers are bad, but he can distribute the ball pretty well for a combo guard, and he continues to play good defense – on a bad defensive team like the Knicks, he has held players to a PER 1.2 below expected as well as limiting their true shooting percentage (TS%) to right on their average. Why is that impressive? Because only 4 Knicks who have played at least 100 minutes this year have managed to stymie the shooting of their counterparts – Nate Robinson at 3.9% below expected TS%, Jared Jeffries at 1.0, Toney Douglas at 4.7 and then Hughes right at even. That kind of defensive focus will fit right in with the Bobcats (and the poor shooting, too – CLT is 22nd in the league in FG%). Welcome to the Queen City, Larry – but please do not make me create “Hey Larry Hughes please stop taking so many bad shots again”.
