According to Rick Bonnell of the Charlotte Observer, Noah Vonleh had surgery today to take care of a sports hernia. His expected time away from basketball is 6-8 weeks, and that will keep him out of training camp.

Although head coach Steve Clifford has already come out and made it clear that he doesn’t expect Vonleh to have a huge role this season, this is still disappointing. Vonleh showed us his length and ability to control the glass during summer league, but he also showed us just how raw his game still is – especially offensively. Vonleh needs every opportunity he can get to develop in high intensity situations, and training camp was as close as he was going to get to that since summer league.

Since Vonleh did have surgery with this injury, which isn’t always necessary, it’s fair to assume that there was a small tear in the lower abdominal area – where sports hernia injuries typically occur.

This injury does actually make training camp a little more interesting. Cody Zeller should receive more attention with the absence of rookie Vonleh, and with an excellent camp, could still play his way into the conversation for the starting PF position. By no stretch of the imagination is this what I’m expecting, but it’s noteworthy.
