Walker lifts Bobcats in pre-season opener: Postgame Notes

  • Kemba Walker stole the show tonight in Time Warner Cable Arena and lifted the Bobcats to a 79-77 pre-season win in his first game with Charlotte. He was a very mediocre 4 of 13 from the field, but was able to get to the foul line at a high rate and tallied 9 of his 18 points from the charity stripe in only 19 minutes on the court. Coach Silas said about Kemba after the game, “He’s just got it.”
  • D.J. White and Derrick Brown both were forces on the glass for the Bobcats as Brown pulled down 10 REB (6 offensive) and White added 6 REB of his own. Brown has a tendency to get lost at times on the court and plays a little out of control, but will certainly get minutes this season and actually started tonight in the place of Corey Maggette. White has lost at least 15 pounds in the off-season and looks much more athletic this season.
  • Boris Diaw, who hasn’t lost any weight as some reports suggested, had a nice game and showed that he will be able to effectively guard bigger 4’s and 5’s this season when he has to. Diaw was able to keep Atlanta’s Al Horford off the boards as Horford finished with a goose egg in the REB category. Diaw had 12 PTS, 3 STL, but only 3 REB. He struggles to get the ball off the glass for rebounds because he hardly even jumps, but he can move bigger players out of the post with his width as he did tonight.
  • Tyrus Thomas laid on the floor and moaned in pain, but was able to hobble off on his own power. Tyrus seemed to tweak his left ankle and that’s exactly what it was. Coach Silas stated, “x-rays were negative.” Reports are a mild sprained left ankle.
  • The Hawks scored 46 points in the paint and the Bobcats only had 24. This is a stat that the Bobcats are expected to lose on a regular basis this season because of their height issue right now, but losing it by 20+ points a night will not help their cause at all.
  • Bobcats shot a measly 35.5% from the field and a lot of that has to do with the lack of scoring opportunities around the basket for them.
  • The Bobcats are currently carrying 20 players on the roster and Coach Silas stated that there were “probably around 13 spots” already locked it for the team. Players such as Taylor Griffin, Ben Uzoh, Durrell Summers, and Isma’il Muhammed are all on the bubble and have only one more pre-season game to prove themselves.
  • Melvin Ely (dehydration), Corey Maggette (back spasms), Eduardo Najera (torn cartilage, left knee), and Reggie Williams (torn meniscus, left knee) did not play tonight.
